Subclass 500 Visa for University Students
Most previous types of Student visa for Australia were modified to the Subclass 500 Visa. It is part of a new framework established in 2016 to assess student visa applications. Applicants are split into two categories, depending on which country they come from. Students from countries that fall under the “Streamlined” category (Mostly Anglophone countries and a few European nations), do not need to prove any English language competency or financial ability. The other category is the “Regular” category, and applying for a class 500 visa will require the applicant to pass an IELTS English examination and demonstrate financial capacity to support themselves while in Australia.
Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) Requirements are now also considered. It is designed to prevent persons from abusing student visas to remain in the country illegally, by taking into account past immigration history, and weighs circumstances that would induce the applicant to return to their country of origin after their studies are complete against those that might induce them to remain in Australia. Applicant must now also pass certain health and background checks before approval.
